“El Paso Officer Puts His Life On The Line” (Feb 8th 2024)

Dear Mr. Zimmerman, I have read several articles pertaining to your news column, and I wanted to say a big thank you for allowing freedom of speech to be prevalent in The Jerusalem Press. I find it very interesting with the news items that this paper covers not just international headlines of Israel and the Middle East but the local interest columns involving the El Paso Police Department.

I watched the intense video from February 8th, 2024, that this newspaper was the first news media outlet to break the news. I was completely riveted by the video, watching this play out as if I was there in real time.  I have to say this was intense in all senses of reality, the Officer who approached the subject without having to use his own weapon shows not only bravery but a real deep understanding of a person in complete turmoil. The video shows the actions of other Officers yelling at the subject, which appeared to be causing more stress to the subject, who was holding a gun to his head.

But the fact that this Officer who quickly built rapport dedicated his own faith and training took the time to make a genuine connection to the individual. This has the term of heroism in all aspects of the word. I would imagine that this Officer who saved his life is getting the recognition he deserves.

How many times have we seen Police involved shootings reacting to a mentally ill subject where the loss of life is the conclusion to the incident? I applaud this Officer for his incredible faith and bravery in serving his community and his fellow colleagues. I would like to reach out to this Officer personally and thank him for his service. This video should be released to all media outlets, for the world needs to see these actions of absolute professionalism in handling such a situation as this one.

My question is, based on the previous articles, is there some form of conflict with the actions of this Officer and his Department? I don’t understand how this could be anything but positive for the Department in saving a person’s life. How could this be viewed as a negative result? I don’t understand if this is the case; I couldn’t imagine any Department could frown upon the actions of this Officer in saving a human life. This needs to be imploded and made viral for all people to view the professionalism and the high stakes of one man’s actions being de-escalated by an outstanding Officer. Let’s make this Officer famous for his brave actions, and let’s make this Department famous for their lack of support for the Officer and for mental health. Joe Rogan, Ben Shapiro, Fox News, CNN, The Times, The Five, let’s make some worldwide noise and have this Officer acknowledged. This is a feel-good, courageous story that needs the attention it deserves. Thank you for printing this story of real dedication and breaking this story originally.
